Journal of the sixtyfifth day on board

6th July, 1999

After many weeks at sea I am able to make a first remark about the expedition:

“The Mediterranean is not swarming with sharks.”

Is it obvious?
Perhaps.
At least all the bathers will be serene, even those who love swimming offshore with open wounds.
Relax!
The possibility of facing a shark, a dangerous one, is very small and, if I want to really want to hurt myself, I could also add: especially if Mission Sharks is in the neighbourhood.

And why is the Mediterranean not swarming with sharks?

Perhaps because there aren't any more sharks?
Perhaps because there are no sharks at this time of the year?
Perhaps because they are not where we are?
Perhaps because we are not capable of finding them?
Perhaps because they don’t like our chum?
Maybe in fact the contrary. There are many sharks who love our chum and we are not able to spot them?
Perhaps we are seeing many sharks but are not telling you?

The world of sharks is a world of 'perhaps' and 'why’ and if you try to solve one of them there will be another two of them. I mean 'perhaps' and 'why' and not the sharks.
