Journal
of the fortyfifth day on board
16th June, 1999
Do
you recognise him?
24 hours ago he was 36 years old with short hair.
In this photo, John Abela has got younger. He is 23 and is living
one of the most important days of his life.
Beside him there is Carolina, the biggest white shark in the
world, a female over 7 metres long and weighing around 4 tonnes.
Carolina remains caught in the lens of Alfredo, the fisherman
who then dragged it into port.
“When
we got this large shark onto the deck her heart was still beating.
Her mouth was enormous and from her stomach enormous we pulled
a dolphin, a 'verdesca', a large turtle and a few rubbish bags.
Mesuring her was easy but weighing her was a problem: in
Malta there were no sclaes big enough. We cut the shark into
pieces and measured her bit by bit. I bought the jaw from Alfredo
and spent 3 months cleaning her. Today I have the mouth, the
biggest sharks mouth in the world, the mouth of Carolina the
priness of the deep.
.
Now and again there are people who, for different reasons, contest
the length of this shark, but the measurments are correct: I
would not have had any reason to increase them. Besides which
the jaw of Carolina is not for sale and I will not be separated
from it for any amount.”
